Event to promote mental health, suicide prevention

Walla Walla Union-Bulletin - 5/18/2024

May 17—Reach Out Walla Walla is gearing up for its fifth annual Suicide Prevention Walk this month, an event meant to bring attention to mental health and local resources.

This year's event will take place on Walawàla Plaza on First Avenue, beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, with a resource fair and live music. The walk occurs each year in May in recognition of national Mental Health Awareness Month.

Reach Out Walla Walla, formed in 2016, aims to address substance and suicide prevention on a local level by reducing stigma, assisting those who are struggling and providing mental health and prevention training.

Other organizations expected to attend the walk and resource fair include Trilogy Recovery Community, the Walla Walla County Department of Community Health, Community Resilience Initiative, Greater Health Now and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, or NAMI Walla Walla.

The organizations will have information to share about dealing with mental health issues and how to help others who are affected.

Walla Walla Public Schools typically participates in the event as well, including students and staff members involved with Sources of Strength, which is a local mental health program for students.

The event will feature community speakers starting at 4:30 p.m., with the walk planned to begin at 5 p.m.

Registration is not required for the Suicide Prevention Walk and all community members are welcome to attend. More information about the event is available on Reach Out Walla Walla's website at
